Micro-needling, also called collagen-induction therapy, is a minimally invasive solution used to treat skin conditions. The practice of micro-needling can be dated back to 1995, but it has really started to gain much recognition amongst individuals seeking medical grade results without painful and costly alternatives.

Treatment is customized to the specific needs of your skin, by creating tiny microscopic tears on the skin that promotes the release of growth factors, including collagen and elastin. The release of these proteins promotes scar healing and the production of new tissues.

These microscopic tears may cause low to mild derma, a deeper layer of skin, in order to rebuild and release new growth factors. New collagen, will keep skin fresh, vibrant and radiant.

There are many factors that affect the production of collagen, such as aging, trauma, injuries, acne scarring, stretch marks and more. At A Silent Moment, our customized face medical grade treatments are customized to your individual needs, level of commitment and desired results. Here’s our guide to one of them – the micro-needling facial.

How Does A Micro-needling Facial Work?

Microneedling uses the principle of skin regeneration to guide its methodology. Whenever a portion of the skin suffers any trauma, the body releases collagen and elastin. This is known as ‘scab’, a protective layer that forms over a wound or cut.

Microneedling creates surface level micro punctures in the skin with the help of fine short needles. The trauma that is caused causes the skin to rebuild and stimulates the production of nutrients and hormones to the ‘affected’ area.

The trauma to stimulate and rebuild the production of collagen and essential proteins is skin surface and although the process can vary from one individual to the other, scabbing, swelling and peeling can last from 3-10 days. Proper at home care will help avoid skin and speed up the recovery process..

How Is Microneedling Done?

Microneedling should always be carried out by a professional or an aesthetician. Not only is professional micro-needling safer, but it also gives better results. A professional micro-needling facial treatment is done in a sterile and controlled environment by the hands of an expert.

In fact, more than 80% of patients in this study have graded the treatment as “excellent” and have reported no adverse effects.

Professional micro-needling facials do not require multiple sittings. For most people, a single session every 3 to 6 months can produce visible results. If you are aiming to achieve a very specific goal, like acne scarring, you should plan more regular micro-needling facials over a longer period of time.

What Are The Benefits of Microneedling?

Professional micro-needling provides many health and cosmetic benefits. Its versatility and non-invasiveness are the reason why facial treatment has gained popularity over the years. Here is a range of benefits that a professional micro-needling facial provides.

  1. Microneedling addresses various skin issues

While most treatments are specific and tend to be used to solve just one or two problems, micro-needling provides solutions to many problems. These range from stretch marks, acne scarring, alopecia, skin pigmentation issues, loose skin, and more.

The controlled wounding created by professional micro-needling sets forth the process of healing that helps with these issues in the long run. A study in 2008 points to the benefits of regular micro-needling treatment and claims that treatment is done in sessions that are held one month apart over a period of four months resulted in the production of collagen and elastin up to 400% more over the period of next six months

  1. It stimulates dormant hair follicles

The benefits of micro-needling aren’t limited to skin health alone. When combined with other treatments, it has shown to improve the results of those treatments as well.

In a study about treating alopecia, a group of 100 people was divided into two. One group was given a treatment of just minoxidil lotion while the other group received a treatment of minoxidil lotion along with micro-needling. After a period of 12 weeks, 82 percent of people from the second group reported a 50% improvement as opposed to 4.5 percent from the first group.

  1. Microneedling can treat pores

According to the American Association of Dermatology, Microneedling can reduce the  “appearance of large pores, fine lines and wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks.”

  1. It helps with scar treatment

Microneedling breaks down old tissues and promotes the production of elastin and collagen that results in the creation of healthier skin. Through this micro-needling helps minimize the prominence and appearance of scars.

  1. It prevents signs of aging

The procedure of micro-needling facial exfoliates the skin by disrupting the derma and removing dead skin cells. The trauma that is artificially created also causes the body to supply blood, oxygen, and nutrients along with collagen and elastin to the area, thus making it look more lively.

  1. Microneedling reduces wrinkles and fine lines

Wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin are caused due to the loss of collagen. With the help of micro-needling, the production of collagen is stimulated, thus reducing wrinkles and fine lines. As compared to treatments like laser and light treatments, not only is micro-needling cheaper but it also has no downtime.

  1. It improves skin quality

The microneedles used during the facial treatment remodel existing collagen and promote the growth of new collagen and blood vessels in the skin. After reaching a particular age, the production of collagen and elastin reduces naturally. Through micro-needling facial, one can get a natural and glowing skin along with a softness that is highly desirable.

I thought it was interesting when you explained that micro-needling can be used to remove dead skin cells on your face. If I were to guess, I would think that these cells make your face appear older than it actually is. It seems like it would be a good idea for a person to a micro-needling treatment at least once a year.
